The other day I went with Sara to the movies to watch The Dark Knight Rises. I’m not writing a post to appraise it so all I’ll say is that some bits were clearly more awesome that others but on average it was pretty amazing.
A quote that stood out particularly was from Deputy Commissioner Foley, who just before entering combat against Baine’s side, shouts something like “there’s only one police force in this town”. I found it a very interesting declaration, as it assumes that a city should only be protected by one unified and well co-ordinated local force. That statement, for some reason, made me feel good for a moment.
But then I realised that, in the city where I’m from, Santiago de Compostela, a city of less 100,000 inhabitants, if I recall correctly we are protected and served by no less than four different Police corps. In increasing oreder of significance, those would be: each city or council’s local police (Policía Local); the authonomic police (Policía Autonómica); the Guardia Civil (which depends on the Spanish Ministry of Defence), and the National Police Corps (Cuerpo Nacional de Policía).
So there’s not an actual body that assumes the role of ‘defender of the city’, which is a bit dissapointing. I wonder what would be the public reaction in the UK or the US if the government decided to create a national police corps.
(As you can see I’m trying to write here more, so be prepared to see more of these weak posts. I’m trying to improve as quick as I can)
