Since I entered CASA for my summer work placement, among other things I’ll talk about later, I’ve been experimenting with some cool ways of visualizing data in maps. Binning is a technique I first read about in MapBox’s blog, which consists (from what I’ve read so far) in dividing the map in a hexagon grid and distributing the data placing tiles in the grid. It’s quite fun, so , while I develop a bigger project based on this (which, again, I’ll talk about later on), I’ve produced a simple visualization of the distribution of airports in the world. Here it is:
Because the dataset I’m using distinguishes between types of airfields (heliport, airport, air base…), I’m working on adding colour information to the tiles, but this is a good start.
